Tesla Optimus V3 to Launch in Q1 Next Year, 1 Million Unit Production Line by Year-End

The latest progress on Optimus V3 has come to light.

During Tesla's Q3 earnings call today, Elon Musk emphasized: "As we bring AI into the real world, Tesla is at a critical inflection point." In this process, the humanoid robot Optimus undoubtedly serves as a key carrier.

Throughout the earnings call, Musk provided clear answers regarding the company's plans for its robotics business. Unlike previous vague expectations, he offered more defined insights into the positioning, product timeline, and mass production plans for Optimus V3.

Regarding V3, Musk stated bluntly that it will be launched in the first quarter of next year. He even set more aggressive targets: after the completion of a production line with an annual capacity of 1 million units for V3, the annual output during the V4 era is expected to reach 10 million units, and upon the launch of V5, annual production could potentially reach between 50 million and 100 million units.

Musk believes Optimus may become "the greatest product ever," because Tesla possesses physical world AI technology, strong electromechanical engineering capabilities, and large-scale production capacity. The combination of these advantages gives Tesla an edge that other companies find difficult to match.

Regarding the most critical product timeline, Musk stated that Optimus V3 will be launched in Q1 of next year (around February or March). The V3 design will be more anthropomorphic and realistic in appearance. He described it as: 'V3 looks more like a person dressed in a robot costume; its form and movements are so realistic that people might need to touch it to confirm it is a robot.'

In terms of anthropomorphic design, many global robot manufacturers have recently adopted similar approaches. For example, Unitree's newly released H2 bionic bot features facial designs, Figure 03 wears soft knitted clothing, and 1X Company's NEO robot previously showcased a warm, human-like appearance.

The V3's exterior design also aims in this direction, indicating that anthropomorphism will likely become a major trend in future robot iterations.

However, Musk noted that bringing robots to market remains an extremely difficult task. Technologically, creating hands as dexterous and capable as human hands is challenging; the hand and forearm of Optimus represent a significant engineering hurdle.

Musk has repeatedly emphasized these difficulties regarding robotic hands in public forums. For humanoid robots to perform practical tasks in real-world scenarios, hand dexterity is crucial. In fact, developing a functional dexterous hand is often harder than building the entire robot body. Nevertheless, this is an unavoidable challenge for achieving general-purpose robotics.

Plan to build a production line with 1 million units of Optimus capacity by the end of next year

Actually, Tesla's mass production of Optimus has been fraught with difficulties this year. In March, Elon Musk stated at a Tesla all-hands meeting that the company would produce 5,000 Optimus robots this year. However, in July, late.com Auto reported that Tesla had paused humanoid robot production and was modifying the design.

At today's Q3 earnings call, Musk admitted that V2 faces nearly insurmountable challenges for mass production due to high manufacturing costs, effectively signaling that the plan to produce 5,000 Optimus robots this year is largely off track.

In terms of large-scale manufacturing, the robotics industry lacks an established supply chain, so Musk said Tesla must vertically integrate, diving deep into the supply chain and manufacturing some components itself.

Under their plans, Tesla aims to begin constructing a production line capable of manufacturing 1 million Optimus robots by the end of next year. According to Musk, scaling up Optimus represents "infinite possibilities for wealth creation," as robots can work 24 hours a day without needing to charge, simply remaining plugged in, and may achieve annual productivity five times that of humans.

However, the timeline for planning the robot production line differs from the expected launch date of V3 by only about 10 months, which poses a significant challenge for component consistency. Given the current supply chain situation, finalizing the hardware solution for robots is difficult; once mass production starts, the robot's hardware must remain relatively stable, at least avoiding major changes.

Musk stated that while the hardware design will be finalized after production begins, it will undergo continuous iteration. This is because many hardware issues can only be discovered as the project progresses, so Tesla's approach to Optimus hardware design involves rolling updates.

Regarding the Optimus production line, Musk pointed out that it will take time to ramp up and reach an annual production capacity of 1 million units.

When discussing Optimus's future mass production targets of 50 million or even 100 million units in the V5 era, Musk's confidence was evident. However, he revealed that building his envisioned "robot army" requires ensuring sufficient control over the company; otherwise, there is a risk of being ousted. Therefore, he hopes the "compensation proposal" will be approved at the shareholders' meeting on November 6.

This compensation proposal refers to the incentive goals Tesla designed to retain Musk for at least 10 years. Upon achieving all targets, Musk's shareholding would increase from 13% to 25%.

However, these targets are not simple. First, Tesla's market capitalization needs to reach $8.5 trillion, which is approximately an eightfold increase from its current value. Next, profits need to reach $400 billion. Finally, cumulative deliveries must include 20 million vehicles, 1 million robots, 1 million Robotaxis, and 10 million active FSD users.

If these goals are met, Tesla will have basically achieved its objective of bringing AI into the physical world. By then, this modest compensation proposal will seem insignificant. Nevertheless, what we need to focus on most right now is whether Optimus V3, launching next quarter, will deliver results that satisfy the market.
